BCCN has been actively engaged in conservation education, raising awareness about biodiversity conservation in secondary schools, buffer zone user groups, community forest user groups, and areas outside the buffer zone. Through various educational initiatives, the organization has focused on promoting the importance of preserving biodiversity and sustainable natural resource management. By targeting diverse groups and communities, BCCN aims to instill a sense of responsibility and understanding of the need for conservation efforts, fostering a culture of environmental stewardship and sustainable practices. The Ganges river dolphin (Platanista gangetica) is an endangered species, with a critically endangered status in the national red list of mammals and a protected (Appendix I) status under Nepal's National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act 1973 and CITES law. The Koshi barrage in the Koshi River, bordering Nepal and India, serves as the main habitat for this species, and Koshi Tappu has been designated as a Ramsar site of international significance. Despite a global population estimate of 2000, Nepal is home to fewer than 20 Ganges river dolphins. A project is set to be implemented from August 2022 to November 2023, focusing on the protection and conservation of this critically endangered species and its ecosystem. The project aims to balance the livelihoods of fishermen and local communities with the conservation of natural habitats. Conservation efforts are crucial not only due to the global endangered status of the river dolphins, but also because they occupy the apex of the food chain in freshwater ecosystems, benefiting other endangered aquatic fauna and providing numerous freshwater ecosystem services essential for human well-being. The main partner organizations for this project are the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) and the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve. Funding is provided by the VAN TIENHOVEN FOUNDATION FOR INTERNATIONAL NATURE PROTECTION in the Netherlands.
